July 21. 2024

It’s been a crazy spring so far. We had cold, snow, rain, a lot of wind and now heat. At least so far this year there hasn’t been any fire bans because we’ve had rain off and on. The lakes are higher than they usually are this time of year and we hope they stay that way. With the lack of snow this past winter it could have been difficult to launch boats like last fall.

The mayfly hatch is over with in our area so the fish are back to being hungry. There have been a lot of large fish caught and returned to the water and also a lot of smaller ones. No one has gone hungry for lack of eating size fish.

There are no bans at the border at this time. The U.S. is trying to put in effect a new rule to bring your dog back to the states after visiting Canada. It’s supposed to be active August 1st, 2024 so read up if bringing pets across. It’s very confusing so I called the U.S. border and they told me not to be concerned about it this year just be in compliance with it next year. We’ll see if it even goes through!

We still have a few fall bear tags available if anyone is interested. Hopefully there won’t be any severe storms like there was last Sept. where some of our hunters got trapped out in the woods because of all the trees down.

BORDER RESTRICTIONS DROPPED 09/30/2022

Northern Ontario Border Working Group Press Release on the Removal of Border Restrictions

Today, the Northern Ontario Border Working Group circulated a press release to reiterate our support for the Government of Canada to drop the remaining border restrictions. In this press release, NOBWG continued to support the end of the vaccination requirement, end of random testing and making the ArriveCAN app submission optional.

2023 started off with lower water levels than last year. Last year was unusually high and we could use some of that moisture now. It seems the rain keeps missing us for the most part. There has been a burning ban on for a couple weeks now. The customers are missing sitting around campfires.

The smoke from Ontario fires hasn’t bothered us till today (May 13th). There was no smoke early this morning and then all of a sudden the sky got smokey and the smell of smoke is quite strong. I Quickly checked the fire map and nothing is really close by but the smoke is sure hitting us.

We’ve had very warm weather and then the next day it’s cool. It looks like hot weather is going to hit us again next week with very little chance of rain. The fish don’t seem to mind because large walleye have been caught. Check out the pictures under Fishing.

We had a large storm in the beginning of Sept. by Raven, Sowden and Selwyn. Lot of damage to trees and some property. Had bear hunters out in their stands when it hit. Pretty scarey. They’ll never forget that hunt!
